Transcript

Hello, my name is Syeda Wardah Tahir. I’m a qualified dentist and currently completing my final semester of a Master of Public Health at Western Sydney University.

My journey into public health has been shaped by a deep commitment to equity, culturally responsive care, and the belief that prevention and policy can transform lives. With hands-on clinical experience and formal training in epidemiology, health promotion, and policy, I bring a unique perspective that bridges individual care and population health.

During my internship at SafeWork NSW, I worked on public health campaigns that addressed workplace violence in the healthcare sector. I contributed to evaluation planning, stakeholder engagement, and the development of inclusive and ethical communication materials. These experiences taught me the importance of using evidence, empathy, and collaboration to drive meaningful health outcomes.

I value integrity, respect, and cultural humility in all that I do. Whether leading oral health sessions for children or contributing to regulatory initiatives, I strive to ensure my work is person-centred, ethical, and grounded in public health principles.

In this e-portfolio, you’ll find reflections on my capabilities, achievements, and aspirations as an emerging public health professional. I invite you to explore further by reading my full Capability Statement through the link provided.

Thank you for watching.

“The essence of global health equity is the idea that something so precious as health might be viewed as a right.”

Brightening Smiles: Transforming Oral Health for Aboriginal Children in NSW

This assignment describes the tender application I developed as part of my university coursework, aiming to address the high burden of dental caries among Aboriginal children in New South Wales. The proposal outlines a culturally responsive, school-based oral health intervention designed using the socio-ecological model and the Ottawa Charter. It highlights my skills in public health planning, stakeholder analysis, budget development, and program evaluation—demonstrating my capacity to design holistic, community-led health promotion initiatives.

The project involved developing a research protocol, selecting validated assessment tools, outlining ethical procedures, and planning a data analysis strategy. It highlights my ability to design person-centred, ethically sound research that addresses gaps in aged care and oral health policy, especially for vulnerable populations.

Evidence of Soft Skills

School-Based Health Promotion Campaign

Throughout my public health journey, I have developed a strong set of soft skills through both academic and practical experiences, including a school-based health promotion campaign in Pakistan and my internship at SafeWork NSW. During the campaign, I delivered engaging oral health education to children, collaborated with educators and oral health professionals, and tailored content to be age-appropriate and locally relevant. These experiences strengthened my abilities in health communication, stakeholder engagement, teamwork, cultural awareness, and professional writing. I also demonstrated adaptability and time management by balancing campaign planning, project deadlines, and cross-sector collaboration. These images capture moments where I applied these skills in real-world settings.

Recommended Literature

Throughout my public health studies, certain books have significantly shaped my understanding of health systems and program planning. These two texts stood out for their clarity, practical relevance, and long-term value. I highly recommend them to any new student beginning their journey in public health.

Reading this book early in my degree gave me a solid grounding in how Australia’s complex health system operates. Duckett presents policy, funding, and service structures in a way that is accessible yet deeply informative. I appreciated how the book connects real-world issues like hospital wait times and funding inequities—to broader systemic challenges. It helped me approach assignments and discussions with a clear understanding of government roles, Medicare, and current reform debates. This text was foundational to developing my policy analysis skills.

This book transformed the way I think about designing health interventions. The Intervention Mapping approach broke down complex program planning into structured, manageable steps. I found it particularly helpful for group assignments and when developing project proposals it guided me to think critically about behavioural theory, stakeholder involvement, and evaluation strategies. The practical tools and case examples made it feel directly applicable to community health settings. It’s a book I continue to refer back to whenever I’m planning a health promotion activity.
